COVID Grand Rounds

Overall description: The COVID Grand rounds is aimed to be a virtual grand rounds that is held monthly with an innovative format that aims to educate healthcare providers in Arizona regarding the latest developments regarding the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Emphasis will be placed on the epidemiology of the disease, public health policies, prevention (including vaccination), and treatment approaches for COVID and post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 virus infections (PASC).

Background and knowledge gap: The prevention and management of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is rapidly evolving and heretofore unprecedented. There is a glut of new information regarding COVID-19 prevention approaches, vaccinations, new variants, therapies, and post-COVID syndrome (“long haulers” or PASC) and their long-term care and recovery which healthcare providers are finding to be increasingly difficult to follow. We need multidisciplinary grand rounds that addresses these issues and to provide timely and relevant information to healthcare providers. Specifically, rural healthcare providers have expressed the need for rapid, time-efficient, and seamless ways of learning about the latest developments in COVID and post-COVID management and treatment options.

Objectives:

1. Learn about new prevention and treatment approaches for COVID including vaccinations and novel therapeutics.
2. Learn about the long-term symptoms and consequences of COVID-19 (“Long-haulers”) and approaches to treating and managing this condition that can affect various organ systems.

Format: 10 minute “huddle” followed by 30-minute detailed presentation and 20 minutes for Q&A. The novel format will commence with a 10-minute “distillate” (or summary of the “take home” points) provided to the busy healthcare provider who may not be able to attend the entire 40-minute presentation. Subsequent 30-minutes will elaborate and justify these take home points. Finally 20-minutes will be available for Q&A moderated by the Director or deputized faculty member. In the era of the infodemic, studies have shown that a brief huddle is the best way for healthcare workers to cope with information glut during the COVID-19 pandemic [1]. Category 1 CME credit will be made available for those wishing to seek CME credit.
